Temporary Accommodation – Australian Federal Government in Papua New Guinea
2014
The need of the Australian Federal Government to review existing temporary accommodation in Papua New Guinea, with a view to improving and expanding the accommodation currently available, presented a variety of challenges for MJC Sustainability.
Our scope included a sustainability review of current temporary accommodation facilities. For this purpose, MJC Sustainability drew on our experience with a variety of sustainability assessment tools including GreenStar, LEED, BREEAM and the Queensland UDIA’s Envirodevelopment tool. From this, a comprehensive opportunities matrix was developed for consideration by the client.
In planning for delivery and construction of the additional accommodation, MJC Sustainability developed the following management plans for the temporary accommodation construction project:
- Construction Environmental Management Plan
- Biosecurity Management Plan
- Water Management Plan
- Soil and Erosion Management Plan
- Vegetation Clearing Management Plan
- Boat speed and strike management plan
- Noise and vibration management plan
- Stakeholder engagement plan
- Legal and regulatory approvals strategy
- Traffic management plan
- Waste management plan
- Biodiversity management plan
- Stakeholder Communication plan
As an Australian Federal Government project in Papua New Guinea, the management plans had to comply with both Australia Federal environmental legislation and Papua New Guinea environmental legislation. Owing to the location of the Project, and the need to transport personnel, equipment and resources across international waters, a number of International Conventions were also applicable.
MJC Sustainability was able to deliver compliant environmental management documentation and strategies to enable the project approval to proceed on time.
